A cult hero, Slim Gaillard was a frequently hilarious personality whose comedy (inventing his own jive language with a liberal use of the words "vout" and "oreenee") generally overshadowed his music. In the mid-'30s he had a solo act during which he played guitar while tap dancing! In 1936 Gaillard began teaming with bassist Slam Stewart as Slim and Slam. Their very first recording became his biggest hit, "Flat Foot Floogie."

Listening to Ray Charles: What'd I Say? on my yahoo launchcast station (jerseymule). And just happened upon this poem about Ray on the Rockzillaworld website. I really miss the fact that Ray Charles won't be around to make music for us live, but he left a great legacy of recordings to savor.

Pops Staples: Father Father

Listening right now to Pops and the Paramount Singers singing on track 4 of this CD, "Jesus Is Going To Make Up My Dying Bed." It's hopeful and a little eerie at the same time. Pops Staples and the Staple Singers (who help him out on some of the other tracks) are favorites of mine because of their unusual vocal harmonies and that great fat wobbly guitar sound. Also on this CD: Bob Dylan's song "Gotta Serve Somebody."

And while I'm on the subject of Dylan, his tribute album "Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan" includes a great version of that tune performed by Shirley Caesar, as well as "When You Gonna Wake Up" by the Spiritual QC's, "Are You Ready" sung a cappella by The Fairfield Four, and the highlight, "Gonna Change My Way of Thinking" by Bob Dylan himself along with Mavis Staples.

Al Green: Listen - The Rarities

I happened on this CD (on the HI Records label) purely by chance. It's a British compilation of 18 tracks by Al Green recorded between 1970 and 1977. That great Memphis soul sound is here, on songs like "Ride, Sally, Ride," "Baby What's Wrong With You" and the gospel sounds of "Up Above My Head" and "Surprise Attack / Highway to Heaven." Produced by Willie Mitchell, this is classic Al Green at his very best.
